There are SO many things you could buy. But do you really need all the latest gadgets? Probably not if I’m completely honest. A 'must-have' item for one home might be completely unnecessary for yours and visa versa, so let's focus on the practical essentials that truly make a difference.

As ever here is a list of things that I have found personally useful or have been told are GREAT by families over the years. Anything with a star is what I would call an ‘essential’ as a midwife.

What will I need for my new baby?

General equipment you will need for your baby

  • Pram (One that lays flat)

  • Carseat (Isofix base that allows the car seat to swivel- not essential but honestly? Game changer, will save your back. You can also get LIGHT car seats - check the weights of them)

  • Moses basket/next to me crib (Second hand is fine but you will need a new mattress) + 3-4 cost sheets

  • Baby Monitor

  • Cellular Blankets (3-4)

  • Baby Vests ( To wear under clothing. Short/Long sleeved depending on weather)

  • Baby Grows

  • Warm Jacket / Coat / Snowsuit

  • Muslin cloths

  • Sleeping Bag (Check weight and tog for time of year)

  • Nappies and Wipes (Personal preference. Although some supermarket own brands for disposable nappies are honestly brilliant, whilst saving £££ - I constantly hear raving reviews)

  • Bottles, Sterilising Equipment, Formula

  • Breast Pump, Milk Storage Bags

  • Baby Bath/Seat

  • Baby Chair/Bouncer

  • Sling (If you plan on baby wearing)
