What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a powerful, evidence-based approach to birth preparation that combines breathing techniques, deep relaxation and mindset work to support a calmer, more positive birth experience. It is a set of practical tools and techniques that help you feel more in control, more informed and more confident about pregnancy and birth.

It’s not about “hypnosis” in the traditional sense — you are always in control. Instead, hypnobirthing helps you understand how your body works in labour and teaches you how to reduce fear, release tension and work with your body, rather than against it.

When you feel calm and safe, your body produces the hormones needed for labour to progress more effectively. Hypnobirthing draws on both evidence-based practice and instinctive birth physiology, helping you reconnect with your body’s natural ability to give birth.

Whether you are planning a vaginal birth or a caesarean birth, the techniques you learn in our classes can help you feel calmer, more prepared and more in control of your experience, whatever path your birth takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can start hypnobirthing at any point in pregnancy, with many people choosing to begin between 20–34 weeks. This allows plenty of time to understand the techniques and practise them before birth.

However, it is never too late to start and still benefit from hypnobirthing. Even in the final weeks of pregnancy, learning how to breathe, relax and feel more in control can make a meaningful difference to your experience.

If you’re unsure when to begin, you’re always welcome to get in touch and I’ll be happy to guide you.

  • The 5 Week Antenatal Course is a complete, in-depth programme designed to prepare you for the whole journey into parenthood. It covers everything from labour and birth preparation (including hypnobirthing and biomechanics) through to postnatal recovery, feeding, caring for your newborn and meeting your baby.

The 2 Week Hypnobirthing Course is more focused. It’s ideal if you’d like to concentrate specifically on labour and birth preparation — including breathing techniques, relaxation, mindset and practical tools to support your body during labour.

It can be a great option if you’ve had a baby before and feel confident with newborn care, or if you’re simply looking for a shorter, more focused course centred around birth itself.

  • Our classes are midwife-led by an experienced midwife who supports women during labour, is qualified in Antenatal Education and trained in Hypnobirthing and biomechanics for birth. We are also FEDANT accredited. This course combines evidence-based information with practical guidance, so you’re not only learning techniques but also gaining a clear understanding of how birth works and how to confidently navigate your options within your local maternity services.

Alongside your hypnobirthing sessions, you will also receive:

    • MP3 relaxation tracks

    • A comprehensive workbook and resources

    • Ongoing support throughout your pregnancy

This is more than a hypnobirthing course. Classes are designed to feel calm, welcoming and personal, giving you the time and space to ask questions, build confidence and truly prepare for birth.

  • No method can guarantee a pain-free birth.

Hypnobirthing is not about removing all sensation or pain, but about helping you feel calmer, more in control and better able to cope with the intensity of labour and the power your body is creating. By reducing fear and tension, many people find their experience feels more manageable, positive and less overwhelming.

You may have the birth you are hoping for, but if your journey takes a different path, hypnobirthing can help you feel more adaptable, informed and in control of your decisions — supporting you to look back on your experience feeling positive and empowered by it.

  • No — you are always fully aware and in control. Hypnobirthing is not about being “put under” or losing control.

Instead, it uses techniques such as breathing, relaxation and focused attention to help you enter a deeply calm and relaxed state. This supports your body to work more effectively during labour and can help reduce fear and tension.

These techniques can be used in all types of birth — helping you feel calmer, more prepared and more in control of your experience.
